MIMO Technologies for Beyond 5G and Towards 6G

Special Session on MIMO Technologies for Beyond 5G and Towards 6G

The increasing reliance of society on wireless communications, along with the emergence of disruptive applications (e.g. smart cities, digital economy and agriculture, and e-health) has stipulated the development of the 5G wireless networks. Recently, the first version of 5G New Radio (NR) with massive MIMO was standardized by 3GPP and the corresponding commercial networks took place in 2018. Though this first 5G NR is expected to offer very high data throughput, communication reliability, and network connectivity, there are still many technical challenges in relation to the MIMO technologies of this 5G NR that are not satisfactorily addressed in previous studies. The current 5G still cannot meet many demands of future wireless systems such as exceptionally high connectivity, ultra-low latencies, super-dense network, high security, and wireless power transfer. In addition, the historical evolution of mobile networks has witnessed a new generation every 10 years. Therefore, now is the right time to investigate advanced technologies beyond 5G. It has been envisioned that holographic massive MIMO, cell-free massive MIMO, large intelligent surfaces, THz communications, machine learning, and artificial intelligence-based techniques are potential technologies for beyond 5G. These are very new technologies where a number of issues and questions still need to be tackled before rolling-out them into practice.

The goal of the special sessions is to solicit the advanced technologies of MIMO systems with a vision of their potential evolvement into beyond 5G and towards 6G. This special session will bring together academic and industrial researchers to identify and discuss potential use cases, open research problems, technical challenges, and solution methods in this context.
